Power is leaving the building. Not disappearing, Pluto never lets anything simply disappear, but relocating, draining out of the places we are used to looking for it, the palace, the capital, the single dominant nation, and pooling somewhere much harder to point at.
For most of history power sat on a throne. Vertical, visible, with a face and a name. Pluto in Aquarius is the long process of it climbing down off the throne and dissolving into the network, horizontal, faceless, everywhere and nowhere at once, which turns out to be a far stranger thing to be ruled by.
Pluto crossed the threshold twice and withdrew before committing. It dipped into Aquarius briefly in 2023, retreated, returned through much of 2024, retreated once more, and finally entered to stay in November 2024. It will work this sign until 2043, with one last backward glance into early 2044. Roughly two decades, which is about how long it takes to rebuild the foundations of a civilization while everyone is still living in the house.
It was here once before, from 1778 to 1798, and that visit should make us sit up. That was the age of revolutions, American and French, when the idea that power flowed downward from a divinely appointed throne was taken outside and, in one case quite literally, beheaded. It was the Enlightenment, the conviction that reason and the rights of the ordinary person could redesign a society from first principles.
Pluto in Aquarius does not reform power. It transforms what power is, who is permitted to hold it, and through what channel it moves. Last time it moved power from the king to the people, at least on paper. This time the channel is not exactly the people. It is the network.
Pluto is power in its rawest form, death and regeneration, everything buried and concentrated and eventually forced to transform whether it consents or not. Aquarius is the network, the collective, technology, the future, the horizontal world of the group and the system and the machine.
Put them together and power itself gets rewired. The old concentrations, the superpowers, the central banks, the seats everyone agreed to call the seats, are being hollowed out, and a new architecture is rising in their place, distributed, technological, multiple, and not remotely guaranteed to be kinder for being spread out.
Expect the unipolar world, and even the older idea of a handful of superpowers, to keep coming apart. Influence is leaking outward toward emerging regional powers, and the assumption that one capital sets the terms for everyone is dissolving in real time.
Expect the same fracturing inside borders, secessionist pressure, large countries straining at their own seams, the balkanizing impulse to break the big centralized thing into smaller pieces that answer only to themselves. The throne is not merely being vacated between nations. It is being questioned inside them.

Sign up freeThe deep wish of the age is decentralization, and its first emblem was cryptocurrency, money that tried to route around the central bank entirely, value held by a network instead of a vault. Crypto is only the rehearsal. The underlying desire, that the important systems be distributed rather than commanded from a single point, will keep spreading into how people want their institutions, their information, their governance and their lives arranged.
And the medium of all of it is technology, which Pluto in Aquarius will drive into every layer of society until it is no longer a tool you pick up but the water you swim in. Expect disruptive inventions and applications arriving faster than the culture can digest them, and expect the very interface to humanity to grow more digital, more intellectual, more apollonian, mediated by screen and system and algorithm.
This is where the sign's shadow shows. Aquarius loves humanity in the abstract and can be remarkably cold to the human actually in the room. Its humanitarian ideal curdles with ease into the imposition of a single approved view, a certainty progressive enough to feel righteous and detached enough to stop noticing real people, a world efficiently arranged around everyone and strangely indifferent to anyone.
But Pluto is the planet of control, and here is the twist that keeps the next two decades from being a simple story of liberation. The same transit that distributes power also concentrates the struggle to control the distribution. Even as the network replaces the throne, someone is racing to own the network.
The large financial institutions and the established powers will not watch decentralization arrive and politely step aside. They will move, hard, to capture the new systems, to surveil them, to bend the distributed thing back toward a center they happen to hold.
Pluto in Aquarius is therefore not one revolution but two forces locked together, power leaving the throne, and power trying to quietly rebuild the throne inside the network where no one will think to look for it. The surveillance state and the liberated network are the same technology pointed in opposite directions.
What is actually being decided, under all the noise, is not whether power transforms, because it will, but what it transforms into. Pluto offers the deal it always offers, the old form has to die and something will be reborn out of it, and the only open question is what.
A genuinely distributed world, where technology serves the many and the throne stays empty because nobody any longer needs to sit on it, is one possible rebirth. A single invisible control, more total than any king ever managed because it runs through the very network everyone mistook for freedom, is another. Both are Pluto in Aquarius. Both are still on the table.
The 1790s did not resolve cleanly either. The revolutions that freed people also built guillotines and eventually crowned an emperor, because power leaving a throne is not the same as power becoming gentle. We are early in our own version.
The technologies that will define the next twenty years are mostly still being born, the new powers still forming, the throne only beginning to empty. Which means the shape of the rebirth is not yet fixed, and that, for once, is the hopeful part.
The network is being built right now, by people, the ordinary ones included, us included. What it remembers about being human, or forgets, is still, for a little while longer, being decided by whoever bothers to show up and build it.
Each one gives you a straight answer in plain words.
