There is a particular kind of person who looks at the ordinary world and simply refuses to accept that it is the only one available. They see through the given, through the beige box, the consensus, the way things have always been done, to something luminous on the other side.
Astrology has a name for that faculty. It calls it Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac, ruled by Neptune, the realm of dreams, illusion, transcendence, and the dissolving of every boundary the other eleven signs spent the year building.
Steve Jobs was born with the Sun there, at 5 degrees Pisces, and almost everything strange and singular about him follows from it.
Most charts knit the Sun into a web of aspects, tensions and harmonies that pull the ego this way and that, sanding off its edges, forcing it to negotiate. Jobs's Pisces Sun does almost none of that. It stands very nearly unaspected by the heavy planets, with no hard square from Saturn, no grinding opposition, no conjunction to dilute it.
Astrologically, this is the mark of an identity that does not compromise, does not blend, and cannot be talked out of itself. The famous reality distortion field, his ability to simply will other people into believing the impossible was possible by next quarter, is written right here.
Pisces is the sign of maya, of glamour in its oldest sense, the casting of a spell. He had a Sun that answered to no one. Its single close thread runs to the North Node, the chart's symbol of destiny and direction. His very self was fused to a sense of mission. He did not have a career; he had a calling, and he could not tell the difference.
What makes him more than a mystic is where that Sun sits. It falls in the sixth house, the house of work, craft, and devotion to the daily labor, beneath a Virgo Ascendant, the sign of the perfectionist artisan. Pisces and Virgo are opposite signs, the visionary and the craftsman, and Jobs lived on the wire stretched between them.
Pisces dreamed the impossible object; Virgo rising sanded every invisible edge of it until it was flawless, the curve of a corner, the font on a screen, the inside of a machine no customer would ever see. The dream was Neptunian. The obsession with making it perfect was the Virgo Ascendant refusing to let the dream stay a dream.

Jupiter conjunct Uranus in Cancer, high in the tenth house of public reputation, is the signature of the visionary disruptor, the one who detonates an entire industry, in public, and calls it a keynote. Mercury in Aquarius trining his career point made him the iconoclast showman, the man who could turn a product announcement into a tent revival.
Mars in Aries supplied the relentless, do or die drive, and in its harder angles the abrasiveness, the temper, the famous cruelty. The Pisces Sun supplied the vision; the rest of the chart was the machine that built it.
You cannot tell the Piscean story of Steve Jobs honestly without the acid. He took LSD perhaps ten or fifteen times in his late teens and early twenties, and he never hedged about what it meant to him. He called it one of the two or three most important things he had done in his life, and said it showed him there was another side to the coin, that the consensus reality everyone agreed to treat as solid was not, in fact, the only one.
He reportedly told people that Bill Gates would be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once. Astrologically this is not a footnote. It is the Piscean experience itself, expressed in chemistry. Neptune, the ruler of Pisces, governs exactly this, the altered states, the dissolution of the ego's hard borders, the felt sense that the line between self and world is a convenient fiction.
Psychedelics are Neptune in a tab, the deliberate, temporary drowning of the Virgo edges so the Pisces ocean can come back in. For most people that ocean is a vacation. For Jobs it became a design philosophy. The same dissolving of the given that he found on acid is what he then demanded of technology, that it stop being a beige box you had to learn and become something that simply flowed, intuitive, frictionless, almost spiritual to touch.
He went looking for transcendence in the Zen monasteries of Japan, in India, in a strict fruitarian diet, in calligraphy, and on acid. They were all the same search. Neptune does not care about the container. It only wants the dissolve. The man who would later obsess over the precise white of a charger had first taught himself, chemically, that reality is negotiable. The reality distortion field was not a sales trick he invented. It was a thing he had seen.
Pisces is the twelfth sign, the one that comes after all the building is done, where the separate self the other signs constructed quietly dissolves back into the whole. It is the dreamer, the mystic, the seer of the not yet real. Steve Jobs took that oceanic, boundless imagination and did the most Virgo thing possible with it.
He gave it edges sharp enough to cut glass, and sold it to the world. He dreamed in the dark like a Pisces, and then he made you hold the dream in your hand.
