Your birth chart was cast for one spot on Earth: the place where you were born. The planets in it would have been in exactly the same degrees if you had been born on the other side of the world at the same moment. What would have been different is the horizon. A different horizon gives a different Ascendant, a different Midheaven and a different set of houses, and so a different arrangement of the same sky. Astrocartography asks a simple question: what does your chart look like from there?

That is the whole idea, and it is worth holding on to, because it explains both what the technique can do and what it cannot. Your planets, your signs and the aspects between them travel with you. Nothing about a new city gives you a Venus you did not have. What a place changes is which part of the chart stands in front, and which part steps back.

The four angles, and why they move

Every chart has four angles. The Ascendant is the degree rising on the eastern horizon, the Descendant the degree setting in the west, the Midheaven the highest point the zodiac reaches overhead, and the IC the point directly below, at the bottom of the chart. Astrologers have long read a planet sitting on one of these four points as one of the loudest things in a chart. It is not tucked away in a house; it is standing in the doorway.

At the moment you were born, each planet stood on an angle somewhere. Venus was rising over some stretch of the planet, culminating over another, setting over a third. Join up all the places where a planet was exactly on the Midheaven and you get a line running from pole to pole. Do the same for the Ascendant and the Descendant and you get curved lines across the map. These are your planetary lines: four for each planet, and the map in our report draws them all.

Which angle matters as much as which planet. A planet on the Ascendant line shapes the self, the body and how you begin things. On the Midheaven it shapes career, reputation and direction. On the Descendant it shapes partners, encounters and what other people bring. On the IC it shapes home, roots and inner life. So a Jupiter line on the Midheaven is not the same invitation as a Jupiter line on the Descendant, even though both involve the same generous planet.

The houses tell the rest of the story

Lines are the famous part of astrocartography, but they are not the whole of it. When you carry your chart to another city, every planet can change house, not only the ones near an angle. Venus that sat in your fifth house at birth might fall in the seventh somewhere else, which says something about love there even if no line passes anywhere near.

Here is a hypothetical example. Imagine someone born in Lisbon with Saturn quietly in the eleventh house and the Sun in the ninth. Cast the same chart for Mexico City and the houses turn: the Sun might now fall in the sixth, among daily work and routine, and Saturn in the eighth. Nothing in the chart has been added or removed. But the person who in Lisbon was mostly occupied with ideas and travel may, in Mexico City, find their attention pulled toward the job, the schedule and the shared responsibilities. Many people report that they are a slightly different version of themselves in a different city. They are usually also a slightly more organized version in the first week, before they find out where the good bakery is.

How our report presents places

Most people do not arrive at astrocartography wanting a map of lines. They arrive with a question: where in the world would be good for me to do this particular thing? So our report starts there.

You choose an aim from the list: succeeding at work, finding romance, building a lasting relationship, feeling your best stamina, making and keeping money, creating and expressing yourself, finding inner peace and meaning, making friends, making a home and raising a family, learning and studying, or making a fresh start. You can also write an aim in your own words, such as "start a business abroad". The first time a phrase is used, a scoring table is written for it and kept with those words, so the same aim always ranks the same places.

Then 300 places are scored for that aim: cities on every inhabited continent, and some natural and historical sites as well. Each planet counts once. A planet on an angle counts most, and the closer it is to exact the more it counts; the others count by the house they fall in there. Each planet is marked as helping, hindering or not counting for your aim, so you can see why a place ranks where it does rather than taking the number on trust. Neighbouring places with the same placements share a row, and your birthplace is scored too, so you know what you are comparing against.

Above the ranking sits the map, with every planet's four lines. Solid lines are the Midheaven and IC, dashed lines the Ascendant and Descendant. You can hide a planet to see the others more clearly, and tap a place to open your chart there.

When you open a place, or type one into the card, the report casts your relocated chart for it. It lists the planets within ten degrees of an angle there, the relocated Ascendant and Midheaven, the twelve houses and what stands in each, and which planets change house compared with your birthplace. It also recalculates your trait map with the houses of that place, showing your ten strongest traits at birth and there, and which ones grow stronger or weaker. If you want words rather than tables, you can ask the AI astrologer to read the best places for your aim, or your chart in one city.

The birth time matters more here than anywhere

Astrocartography is made of angles, and the angles come from the birth time. Four minutes of clock error moves them by a degree, and a degree moves a line by roughly a hundred kilometres on the map. A birth time rounded to the nearest half hour can put a line in the wrong country. That is why our report needs a known birth time and will not draw a map without one. Guessing would produce a very confident map of somewhere else.

An invitation, not an instruction

A good line is not a promise, and a difficult one is not a warning to stay away. A Saturn line asks something of you: patience, structure, effort. Some people do their most serious work under exactly that kind of pressure. A Venus or Jupiter line makes certain things easier, which is pleasant and also easy to waste. And a difficult planet on an angle abroad is the same planet you already live with at home, simply met in a room with brighter lighting.

Astrocartography is a way of thinking about places, not a reason to pack. It is most useful for questions you already have: where to spend a few months, which of two cities fits a goal better, why one trip felt so different from another. Sometimes the most useful result is that the place where you already live ranks better than you expected.

Frequently asked questions

What is astrocartography?
Your birth chart read from a different place on Earth. The planets keep their signs, degrees and aspects, but the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses are drawn from the local horizon, so the same chart puts different things in front in different cities.

What does a planet line mean?
That the planet stood exactly on one of the four angles at that place at the moment of your birth: rising, setting, at the top of the sky or at the bottom. Life near a line is read as taking on that planet's colour, and which angle it is on matters as much as which planet it is.

Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes, more than for any other report. Four minutes of error moves the angles a degree, which is about a hundred kilometres on the map. Without a reliable time there is nothing honest to draw, so the report asks for one.

Can a place rank well without any lines through it?
Yes. Relocation moves every planet into a house of that place, and houses count too. A city with no planet on an angle can still rank highly for love if, say, Venus falls in the seventh house there.

Does living somewhere change my birth chart?
No. You take the whole chart with you. What a place changes is the houses and the angles, and so which part of the chart is most in the foreground there.

Should I move to the city that ranks first?
The ranking describes how your chart reads in each place for one aim; it is not advice to move. Use it to think about places you are already considering, and read it alongside everything else that matters in a real decision.
