Take your birth chart, keep every planet exactly where it is in relation to every other planet, and turn the zodiac underneath it. Turn it until the Moon's North Node sits at the very first degree of Aries. What you are looking at now is the draconic chart.

Nothing has been recalculated. No new astronomy was needed, no new moment was cast. The planets are the same planets, the same distances apart, in the same houses. Only the signs have changed, because the zodiac is now measured from the Node instead of from the spring equinox. That small turn is the whole technique, and the reading that comes from it is surprisingly rich.

Why the Node?

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's path around the sky crosses the Sun's path. They are not bodies; they are crossings, and eclipses can only happen near them. The word "draconic" comes from the old image of a dragon whose head and tail were the two nodes, swallowing the Sun or the Moon at an eclipse.

Ordinary Western astrology measures the zodiac from the equinox, the Sun's crossing of the celestial equator. That zodiac is tied to the seasons, to the year as it is lived on Earth. The draconic zodiac is tied instead to the meeting of the Sun and the Moon. Astrologers who use it read the birth chart as the life as lived, and the draconic chart as the life as intended: what a person keeps reaching for underneath the biography, the thing they come back to even after deciding very firmly not to.

Our report uses the true lunar node, the Node's actual position at your birth, rather than the averaged mean node.

What changes, and what does not

Because the whole chart turns by one arc, a few things follow, and they are worth understanding before reading anything.

The aspects are identical. If your Sun squares your Mars in the birth chart, it squares your Mars in the draconic chart, to the same fraction of a degree. The houses are untouched too, since the planets keep their places around the wheel. What changes is the sign each planet stands in.

Every planet moves back by the same amount, and that amount is simply where your North Node stands. Suppose your Node is at 15° Leo. Then every planet moves back by four signs and fifteen degrees. A Sun at 20° Taurus becomes a draconic Sun at 5° Capricorn. A Moon at 3° Libra becomes a draconic Moon at 18° Taurus. Someone with the Node in the first few degrees of Aries has a draconic chart almost identical to their birth chart; someone with the Node in Libra has one that reads as a near inversion, with every planet in or beside the sign opposite its natal one.

The report shows the draconic position of each planet beside its natal one, counts how many have changed sign, and draws the draconic chart as a wheel of its own, labelled clearly so that it cannot be mistaken for the birth chart.

The contacts are the heart of it

Reading the draconic chart on its own is possible, but it is not where the technique earns its place. The useful part is the comparison. Lay the draconic chart over the birth chart and look for the places where the two touch.

A draconic planet sitting on a natal planet is a place where intention and circumstance land on the same spot. Astrologers read these contacts as among the strongest and least negotiable things in a chart: something a person seems unable to put down. In the example above, if the same person also had natal Venus at 17° Taurus, their draconic Moon at 18° Taurus would sit on it. The reading would be about emotional needs, at the level of intention, fused with how that person loves and what they value. That is the sort of thing people tend to recognise at once and then pretend not to.

Our report looks for four kinds of contact between the draconic chart and the birth chart: the conjunction and the opposition within two degrees, the square and the trine within a degree and a half. It lists the closest of them first, because the tighter the contact, the louder it speaks. A chart with no close contacts is also informative: intention and circumstance run on separate tracks, and the person may feel that what they want and what they are doing are two different conversations.

How to read it

Start with the contacts, closest first. For each, ask what the two planets mean in the birth chart, then read the draconic one as the intention behind it.

Then look at the two or three planets whose change of sign says the most. A natal Mars in Libra that becomes a draconic Mars in Aries describes someone who negotiates politely in daily life and wants, underneath, simply to act. A natal Sun in Gemini that becomes a draconic Sun in Pisces describes a busy, curious surface over a quieter search for meaning. Neither is more true than the other; they are two layers of the same person.

Last, remember what has not changed. Since the aspects are the birth chart's aspects, do not read a draconic square as news. It is the same square you already had, now coloured by different signs.

A layer, not a replacement

The draconic chart does not overrule the birth chart and does not describe a different person. Think of it as a second lens on the same material, useful for the questions the birth chart answers less directly: what am I actually trying to do here, and why do I keep circling back to it?

Not every astrologer uses it, and it is a modern technique rather than an ancient one. Read it as one more angle on a familiar chart and keep what rings true.

When you are curious, see your draconic chart here, start with the contacts, and ask the AI astrologer to read it with you if you want the layers put into words.

Frequently asked questions

What is a draconic chart?
Your birth chart with the zodiac measured from the Moon's North Node instead of from the spring equinox, so the Node begins at 0° Aries. The aspects and the houses are unchanged; only the signs move.

What is it used for?
For the layer of intention behind a life, and above all for its contacts with the birth chart. A draconic planet on a natal planet marks something a person seems unable to put down.

Do the aspects change?
No. Every point moves by the same amount, so the angles between them are exactly as in the birth chart. That is why the draconic chart is read against the natal one rather than on its own.

Which node does the report use?
The true node, the Node's actual position at the moment of birth.

Do I need my birth time?
Not for the draconic positions of the planets, which turn whatever the time. You need one for the houses, which stay as the birth chart drew them. With an uncertain time, read the draconic signs and the contacts and leave the houses out.
