Most techniques in astrology answer the question "what is the sky doing?" Transits look at where the planets are today. Returns cast a chart for the moment a planet comes home. Zodiacal releasing asks something else: where am I in the story? Its answer is not a chart at all but a timeline, a life divided into chapters, each ruled by a sign, each with a beginning and an end you can put dates on.
It comes from Vettius Valens, an astrologer of the second century who set it out in the fourth book of his Anthology. It was largely forgotten for many centuries and has been studied again in recent decades, partly because it does something few other techniques do: it describes the long structure of a life rather than its weather.
The timeline begins from a calculated point called the Lot of Spirit. It is measured from the Ascendant using the positions of the Sun and the Moon, with the formula reversed for people born at night. Spirit stands for action, mind and what a person sets out to do. Its counterpart, the Lot of Fortune, stands for the body and for circumstance, what comes to you rather than what you undertake.
Our report releases from Spirit, so the chapters it shows are the chapters of what you do: work, aims, the direction of your effort. Fortune still has a role, as you will see below, because the peak periods are counted from it.
The first chapter of your life belongs to the sign of your Lot of Spirit. It lasts as many years as the lesser years of that sign's ruling planet, a set of numbers handed down from the ancient astrologers: eight years for a sign ruled by Venus, fifteen for Mars, twelve for Jupiter, nineteen for the Sun's sign Leo, twenty-five for the Moon's sign Cancer, twenty for Mercury's signs, twenty-seven for Capricorn and thirty for Aquarius. When the first chapter ends, the next sign in zodiacal order takes over for its own length, and so on through the life.
So a life does not divide into neat decades. Take a hypothetical person with the Lot of Spirit in Libra. The first chapter, Libra, runs from birth to eight. Scorpio follows for fifteen years, to twenty-three. Sagittarius runs twelve years, to thirty-five. Then Capricorn arrives and stays for twenty-seven years, until sixty-two, and Aquarius follows for thirty. This person passes through three chapters before turning thirty-five and then spends more than a quarter of a century inside a single one. Someone else, with Spirit in Cancer, might spend the first twenty-five years in one chapter. Where the long chapters fall is much of what makes one life read differently from another.
A short chapter is not a lesser one. Eight years under Libra can be as decisive as thirty under Aquarius; it is simply quicker about it, like a guest who arrives late, changes the whole conversation and leaves before dessert.
Inside every chapter the same sequence runs again, this time in months instead of years, beginning from the chapter's own sign. Our report calls these the seasons of a chapter. A Capricorn chapter starts with a Capricorn season of twenty-seven months, then an Aquarius season of thirty months, and so on. The last season is cut short wherever the chapter ends. Valens goes further down, into weeks and days, but two levels are what a life can actually be read by, and that is where our report stops.
Here is the most striking rule in the technique. When a sequence has gone all the way around the twelve signs, it does not simply begin again where it started. It jumps to the opposite sign. Valens called this a loosing of the bond and treated it as a rupture: a life changing direction, often in a way other people can see.
At the level of years, a full circuit of the twelve signs takes 211 years, so no human life completes one. Among the seasons, though, a full circuit takes 211 months, about seventeen and a half years. So every chapter longer than that holds a loosing of the bond, and no shorter chapter can.
In our hypothetical example, the Capricorn chapter begins at thirty-five. Its seasons run from Capricorn through Aquarius, Pisces and onward around the zodiac to Sagittarius. About seventeen and a half years in, in the person's early fifties, the sequence should return to Capricorn. Instead, it jumps to Cancer, the opposite sign. That is the loosing of the bond, and astrologers who use this technique would watch those months closely for a change of direction. The report marks every chapter that holds one, and every season where it happens.
The other thing to look for is the peak period. A season is a peak when its sign is angular counted from the Lot of Fortune, meaning the first, fourth, seventh or tenth sign from it. These are read as the stretches when a life is most active and most out in the world, and the tenth from Fortune is the loudest of the four.

A peak in a chapter you care about is a time when the work of that chapter tends to be visible: promotions, public moments, the projects people remember. It can also simply be very busy, which people tend to notice about three weeks after it started.
The report opens on where you are now: the chapter you are in, from which age to which, the season running inside it, and whether that season is a peak. It names the signs of your Lot of Spirit and your Lot of Fortune. Below that is the full list of the chapters of your life, with ages and dates, peaks and loosings marked, and the seasons inside the current chapter. You can ask the AI astrologer to read where you stand on the timeline.
There is no date to choose. The timeline is fixed by your birth chart, so the report always shows the whole life and highlights the present.
Start with the past. Look at where your chapters begin and end and ask what was happening in your life on those dates. The technique is judged by whether its turns match the turns you already know about. If they do, the dates still ahead become more interesting.
Then, for any chapter, ask what its sign has to do with your birth chart: which house it is in, where its ruling planet sits, what condition that planet is in. A chapter is not good or bad in itself. It says which part of the chart those years are being lived through.
This report needs a known birth time and cannot run without one. The Lot of Spirit is measured from the Ascendant, which moves a degree every four minutes, so with no time there is no lot, no starting sign and no timeline. Unlike a chart of planets, there is nothing to fall back on.
Zodiacal releasing describes the structure of a life, not its events. It says when chapters turn, not what will fill them. When you are ready, see the chapters of your life here.
What is zodiacal releasing?
An ancient timing technique from Vettius Valens that divides a life into dated periods, each ruled by a sign and lasting the lesser years of that sign's ruler, released in order from a lot. Our report releases from the Lot of Spirit.
What is the Lot of Spirit?
A calculated point, measured from the Ascendant using the Sun and the Moon, standing for action, mind and what a person sets out to do. Its counterpart, the Lot of Fortune, stands for the body and for circumstance.
What is a loosing of the bond?
The jump that happens when a sequence of periods completes the circuit of the twelve signs: instead of starting again, it moves to the opposite sign. Valens reads it as a change of direction. In a human life it happens among the seasons, inside chapters longer than about seventeen and a half years.
What is a peak period?
A season whose sign is the first, fourth, seventh or tenth from the Lot of Fortune. These tend to be the most active and most public stretches of a life, and the tenth from Fortune is the strongest.
Why are the chapters so different in length?
Each lasts as many years as the lesser years of its sign's ruling planet, from eight for a sign of Venus to thirty for Aquarius. Life does not arrive in decades, and this technique does not pretend it does.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes. The Lot of Spirit is measured from the Ascendant, so without a reliable time there is no timeline to show.
