Asteroids in your birth chart

The seven classical planets and the three modern ones do not cover everything a person is. The asteroids were brought into astrology to say some of the rest, and they are named for figures the older list leaves out — most of them female, most of them concerned with things the classical planets treat as background.

Cast the chart

Chiron is the one most people meet first, and it is not an asteroid at all but a centaur, orbiting between Saturn and Uranus. It is read as the place where a person was hurt early and never quite stopped being hurt — and, because of that, the place they turn out to be unusually good at helping other people with. Its house says where the wound and the teaching both live.

Then the four main-belt asteroids, between Mars and Jupiter. Ceres is nurture: how you feed people and how you were fed, and how you deal with loss. Pallas is strategy and pattern-recognition, the intelligence that sees the shape of a problem. Juno is partnership and what you require from it, including what you will put up with. Vesta is devotion and focus, what you keep sacred and what you are willing to go without in order to keep it.

Lilith is in this report too and is not an asteroid either: Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, the far end of the Moon's orbit rather than an object you could photograph. It is read as what refuses to be made convenient — the part of a person that will not be domesticated, and what happens around it when other people try.

Read them as detail rather than as structure. A chart is built out of its planets, its angles and its aspects; the asteroids sharpen a reading that already exists, and they are at their most useful when one of them sits exactly on the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant or a personal planet. An asteroid twelve degrees from anything is not telling you much.

The report gives each of them by sign and house with a reading, cast from the same birth data as everything else here. Start with Chiron and with whichever of them touches one of your angles; the rest will keep.

Questions people ask

Which asteroids does this include?

Chiron, Lilith, Ceres, Pallas, Juno and Vesta — the ones with an established body of interpretation behind them, rather than the thousands that have a name and nothing else.

Is Lilith an asteroid?

No. Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point — the far end of the Moon's orbit — not an object. It is read alongside the asteroids because it belongs to the same layer of a reading, not because it is one.

Is Chiron a planet?

A centaur: a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977. Astrologically it is treated with more weight than the asteroids and less than a planet.

Do asteroids matter as much as the planets?

No, and a reading that treats them as equals is padding. They add detail to a chart that has already been read from its planets, angles and aspects — and they earn their place when one of them sits close to one of those.
