Couple astrocartography: where in the world for the two of you

Astrocartography asks how a birth chart reads from another place on Earth. The planets keep their signs and their aspects wherever you go, but the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the houses move, so a planet that sat quietly in a corner of your chart at birth can stand on an angle somewhere else and colour life there. For a couple the question is not where one of you would thrive but where both of you would, and where the relationship itself would.

Cast the chart

So every place is scored three times, with the same rules as astrocartography for one person: on your chart, on your partner's chart, and on your Davison chart. The Davison is the chart of the relationship, cast for the moment halfway between your two births and the place halfway between your two birthplaces. It is a real sky over a real spot on Earth, so its planets have lines on the map like anyone's.

Why not the composite? The composite is an average of two charts, planet by planet. It is a useful picture of the pair, but it has no moment of its own, so there is no sky to project onto a map without inventing one. The Davison has a moment, and that is what makes it the honest relationship chart for astrocartography.

The couple score is 40% each of your two scores and 20% the relationship chart's, minus 3 points for every 10 points between the two of you. That last part is the point of a couple ranking: a city that lifts one of you and weighs on the other is not a city for the two of you, however good its average. Next to every place you see the three scores and the planets that make them.

You choose what the place is for: living together, romance and a trip for two, starting a family, a business together, adventure, or a peaceful life. Each aim weighs the planets and houses that matter for it. If none of them says what you have in mind, you can write the aim in your own words and the places are ranked for that.

Pick one city and the report shows the two of you there: what counts in each chart, and the relocated synastry. The aspects between your charts are the same everywhere; what a place changes is whose house each planet falls in, so your Venus can sit in your partner's seventh house in one city and in the twelfth in another. Both birth times are needed, because the whole map is made of angles.

Questions people ask

What is couple astrocartography?

Astrocartography for two: the places of the world scored on both partners' birth charts and on the chart of the relationship, so the ranking shows where the two of you would do well together, not where one of you would.

Why does it use the Davison chart and not the composite?

A map line needs a real moment, and the composite, an average of two charts, has none. The Davison is cast for the midpoint in time and space between your births, so it is a real sky and can be drawn on a map.

Do we both need an exact birth time?

Yes. The lines and the houses at each place come from the angles of each chart, and the angles move about a degree every four minutes. Without both times there is no map to draw.

What if a place is great for one of us and not the other?

It loses points. The couple score subtracts 3 points for every 10 points between your two scores, and each row shows both scores, so you can see who a place favours.

What is the relocated synastry?

The houses of both charts cast for one city. The aspects between you stay the same everywhere, but which of your partner's houses each of your planets falls in changes with the place, and that changes how you meet each other there.
