Profection is the simplest timing technique in astrology and one of the oldest. Your first year of life belongs to your rising sign. On each birthday the year moves one whole sign forward — second year the second sign, third year the third — so at twelve you are back at the Ascendant, at twenty-four again, and at thirty-six again.
What makes it more than counting is the time-lord. The planet ruling the sign your year lands on takes charge of that year, and where that planet sits in your birth chart, what condition it is in and what it rules elsewhere is what the year is about. A year ruled by a well-placed Venus in the tenth is a different year from one ruled by the same Venus in the twelfth.
The house counted to matters as much as the sign. A third-house profection year turns on siblings, short journeys and everyday communication; a seventh-house year on partnership and open opposition; a twelfth on what is hidden, undone or given away. The twelve-year rhythm means these themes return through a life at regular intervals, which is part of why the technique survives.
Read it with the rest. A profection tells you which planet to watch; the transits and progressions running at the same time tell you what is happening to it. When a year's time-lord is also receiving a major transit, that is the combination traditional astrologers take most seriously.
This needs a known birth time, because everything counts from the Ascendant. Without one the sign your year falls on is a guess, and so is the planet ruling it — there is nothing here that can fall back to a noon chart.
A way of assigning each year of life to a whole sign and to that sign's ruler. Year one is the rising sign, and every birthday advances one sign, returning to the Ascendant every twelve years.
The planet ruling the sign your year has reached. It runs the year, and its place and condition in your birth chart say what kind of year it will be.
No. A profected year runs from birthday to birthday, so it changes on the day you complete a year of life, not with the calendar.
Yes. The count starts from the rising sign, so an unknown birth time leaves both the sign and its ruler undetermined.
