FAQ

What kind of astrology do you use?

We respect every traditional astrological system, and the calculation engine supports several. The default is Western astrology with the Tropical zodiac and Placidus houses, but every user can change both from their profile. For the zodiac you can choose between Tropical (Western standard), Fagan-Bradley sidereal (Western sidereal), Lahiri (the Vedic/Indian standard), Krishnamurti (the KP system), or Raman (traditional Vedic). For the house system you can pick Placidus, Koch, Campanus, Regiomontanus, Equal, Porphyry, Whole House, or Whole Aries (Aries on the 1st house). All calculations are powered by the Swiss Ephemeris.

How does 12andus calculate the reports?

12andus' astrological reports are calculated by accurately weighing hundreds of astrological elements for each individual person. We consider every planet's positions, aspects, and houses, as well as the subtle relationships between them. We weigh all of these elements and use a proprietary method to infer a person's qualities, traits, relationship qualities, and forecast future qualities and attitudes.

It seems you give more importance to inner qualities and states rather than the facts of life.

Astrology is more about inner states than actual events. Unfortunately, popular astrology has altered this by focusing on events, which are actually the effects of inner states. If your inner states, for instance, are about being mellow and romantic, then there are more chances for you to find a lover. Thus, we concentrate on your inner states, which are the root of your external life events.

If I don't know my birth time, are the astrological reports still accurate?

We work hard to give you the best possible report even in the case of an unknown birth time, but be aware that in such a case, some astrological elements will be missing, specifically the 12 houses and the accuracy of the moon position. Those are important elements of a personalized horoscope, so the reports will be less accurate.

What about typical horoscopes based solely on the sign?

There's absolutely no astrological value in that. The "sign" is only the position (not even precise to the degree) of the Sun, which is one among many elements of a horoscope. Astrology works only when it is personalized with a person's birth data.

How are personalized astrological reports different from generic sign astrology?

The "sign" is the position of the Sun in the zodiac at birth. While the Sun is an important element, an astrological reading considers the planets, nodes, 12 houses, and the complex interactions between them. Furthermore, personalized astrology evaluates the exact position of the Sun at birth, while generic signs don't. A Sun placed at the beginning of a sign may experience very different aspects with other planets than a placement at the end of the same sign. In other words, generic sign astrology is inaccurate, incomplete, and most of the time just off-target.

What's in the Birth Chart report?

The Birth Chart report is a full personalized reading of your natal placements, organized by life topic — qualities, traits, predispositions, work, love, spirituality, growth, challenges. The system weighs every planet, every aspect, and the houses they fall in, drawing from a library of hundreds of thousands of interpretation pieces and assembling the ones that match your exact placements. Each section explains why a quality emerges from your chart, citing the specific astrological combinations behind it.

What are Aspects, Combos, and Houses?

Aspects are the angular relationships between planets at the moment of your birth — conjunctions, oppositions, trines, squares, sextiles. They describe how energies in your chart support, challenge, or amplify one another. Houses are 12 life-area divisions of the sky measured from your Ascendant: home, work, relationships, partnerships, transformation, philosophy, career, friendships, and so on. Combos are blends of multiple chart elements that converge on a single quality — e.g. a deeply sensitive nature might come from Moon + Pisces + 4th house combined.

What are the Asteroid readings?

In addition to the classical Sun-through-Pluto, the report includes Chiron, Lilith, Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta, Pholus, and Eros. Each adds a layer the classical planets don't capture: Chiron describes wounds and the path to healing; Lilith, the rejected and reclaimed feminine; Ceres, nurturing; Pallas, strategy; Juno, committed partnership; Vesta, devotion; Pholus, sudden lasting change; Eros, erotic style. Asteroids are part of the free Birth Chart report, but full asteroid interpretations are unlocked at Premium tier.

What's the Trait Map?

The Trait Map is a visual radar of your dominant inner qualities — how strongly "creative", "analytical", "sensitive", "adventurous", "responsible", and dozens of others register in your chart. It collapses the entire weight-and-balance of your placements into a single picture you can read at a glance, and it's the entry point to deeper readings: tap any trait to see exactly which placements feed it.

What's Synastry vs Composite?

Synastry compares two charts side by side and looks at the aspects each person's planets make to the other's — e.g. how your Moon talks to their Mars. It explains how each individual affects the other. Composite charts treat the relationship itself as a third entity with its own birth chart, derived from the midpoints of both. Synastry is "what happens between us"; composite is "who we are together".

What's Trait Pair?

A side-by-side projection of both partners' Trait Maps, highlighting where dominant traits align (shared strengths), complement (one fills the other's gap), or clash (potential friction). It's the fastest way to read a relationship's dynamic before going into the detailed synastry and composite reports.

How many people's birth data can I store?

As a free member, you can store up to 50 birth-data records — yourself plus 49 friends, family members, partners, or anyone else you want to read. Premium members have no limit. Birth data you enter remains private and is never shared, even when you run reports against it.

Can I run a relationship report with someone who isn't on 12andus?

Yes. Add their birth data manually to your private birth-data list and run any relationship report against your own chart. The data stays private to you — they don't need an account, and nothing is shared back.

What's a Forecast vs a Horoscope?

A forecast is computed for a specific date and your birth chart — it tells you what's active for you at that moment. A horoscope (weekly, monthly) summarizes the major transits over a window. Both are personalized to your natal placements; the difference is in time scope. Use a forecast when you have a specific date in mind (a meeting, a trip); use horoscopes for general orientation.

What are Transits?

The current real-time positions of the planets and how they aspect your natal placements. When transiting Jupiter trines your natal Sun, that's a window of expansion; when Saturn squares your Mercury, that's a period of disciplined communication challenges. The Upcoming Transits report lists the most powerful transits ahead, ranked by importance.

What's a Transit Inquiry?

A free-form question about a specific date or window — e.g. "How will my meeting on November 12 go?" or "What's the next three months for my business?". The system computes the transits affecting your chart for the period and answers in context. Premium members can ask transit inquiries about anyone in their birth-data list, not just themselves.

What's the Relationship Forecast?

A forecast applied to the composite chart of two people — the relationship's own future, not either individual's. Useful when planning a shared decision (a trip, a co-investment, a wedding date) or to anticipate a stretch of friction or harmony.

What are the AI chatbots (Birth, Pair, Pathways for the Soul)?

Three specialized AI assistants, each grounded in your real chart data — they don't make up generic astrology, they compute against the same placements the precomputed reports use. Birth answers any question about you ("What's my best career direction?", "Why do I keep avoiding intimacy?"). Pair answers questions about a specific relationship ("What's the deeper purpose of our connection?"). Pathways for the Soul explores your spiritual trajectory and life themes across the long arc.

Are the AI answers reliable?

Each response is computed against your actual chart and includes the placements it drew from at the bottom of the answer (e.g. "This interpretation is related to Venus 13° 53' Taurus opposition Neptune 8° 46' Scorpio"), so you can verify the reasoning. The AI is grounded; it doesn't hallucinate planets you don't have. That said, AI essays are a complement to the structured reports, not a replacement — when you want the canonical interpretation of "Mars in the 8th house", the precomputed report is more thorough.

What's the difference between an AI essay and a regular report?

Regular reports draw from a library of hundreds of thousands of interpretation pieces, hand-written for specific astrological combinations, and assemble the ones that match your placements. AI essays generate fresh prose tailored to your specific question, citing the same chart elements. Reports are deeper for canonical questions; AI essays are better when you have something specific to ask.

What are Initiation, Passages, and Crossroads?

Three gamified paths through your chart, each working a different timescale. Initiation is a guided self-discovery sequence based on your dominant placements — short readings, then questions that invite you to reflect on what each planet/sign teaches in your life. Passages highlights the most powerful active transits as life transitions, telling you what gateway you're walking through right now. Crossroads surfaces important relationship moments via synastry transits — when something between you and someone in your birth-data list is about to shift.

Do I have to do them in order?

No. They update independently based on what your chart and the current sky offer, so you can engage with whichever path resonates today. Each step earns Plutokens, so even working through them slowly accumulates rewards.

What are Plutokens?

The site's reward currency, named after Pluto (transformation). You earn Plutokens by engaging with the platform — answering the Daily Quiz, completing Initiation/Passages/Crossroads steps, participating in community features. Plutokens are applied as discounts at PDF checkout, so the more you engage with the site the cheaper future PDFs get.

What's the Daily Quiz?

One astrology question per day, drawn from the same knowledge base that powers the reports. A correct answer earns 1 Plutoken. A streak of 7 consecutive correct days earns a +3 Plutoken bonus on the seventh day, and the bonus repeats every additional 7-day streak (14, 21, 28…). It's a way to learn astrology in small daily doses while accumulating rewards.

What's the difference between an on-site report and a PDF?

On-site reports are interactive and free (with a daily limit of 12 reports for non-premium users in any rolling 24-hour window). PDFs are professionally formatted, considerably longer than the on-site versions, downloadable, and yours forever once purchased — useful as gifts or for offline reading. Premium members get unlimited on-site reports and one free Themed PDF every month.

What's a Themed PDF?

A focused PDF on a single life topic — love, career, transformation, healing, money, creativity, spirituality — built from the relevant slice of your chart. Optionally for a date range, in which case the PDF includes the transits affecting that theme during the window. Useful when you want depth on one area without working through a full chart report.

Can I get a free PDF?

Yes — every new account is issued the 12anduswelcome coupon, redeemable for one free birth-chart PDF. The coupon is automatically applied at checkout for first-time PDF buyers; you'll see "FREE" instead of the price.

What does Premium include?

Premium removes the 12-reports-per-24h cap and unlocks: unlimited reports, unlimited birth-data slots, full asteroid interpretations, 60 AI essays per month, transit inquiries about anyone, life-topic reports, the trait-pair and forecast features for any person in your list, anonymous browsing, read receipts on messages, and one free Themed PDF per month. Premium is .99/month with no commitment — cancel any time.

How do I cancel?

Settings → My Subscriptions → Cancel. One-click cancellation; your Premium access continues until the end of the period you've already paid for, then drops back to free tier without further charge. No retention dialogs, no confirmation emails — once you click cancel it's done.

Who can see my profile?

Only what you choose. By default your profile is private — your birth data is never shared. If you set your profile to "Social", your age and country become visible to other members, but the exact birth date and birth location are still hidden. Members you've befriended can see slightly more, depending on your privacy settings.

How do I match with compatible people?

Use the Members directory to search by Sun sign, age range, location, or astrological compatibility scoring (which weighs synastry aspects, dominant trait alignment, and life-topic overlap). You connect by sending a message; both sides need to accept the connection before deeper compatibility details unlock.

What are Memes and Personal Songs?

Memes are auto-generated images mashing astrology themes with your dominant placements — shareable on social, useful for breaking the ice in conversations. Personal Songs are AI-composed soundtracks tailored to your chart's signature: one for your Sun sign, one for your Moon, one for Mercury, Venus, and Ascendant. Each captures the mood of the placement in actual music you can listen to.

Can I change my username?

No — the username (the URL handle, e.g. 12andus.com/profile/Heather4729) is set when your account is created and can't be changed afterward. What is editable is the display name — the name shown next to your posts and on your profile page. Edit it any time from Settings → Edit profile.

How do I delete my account?

Settings → Delete account. You're asked to type "DELETE" to confirm and you can leave a short reason (optional). Once confirmed the deletion is immediate — your profile and personal data are removed and you're logged out. The deletion is final; there's no undo.

Is the birth data I input kept private?

Yes, it is. However, your own birth data, the one you set in your profile, will be shared, but only with 12andus members you choose to befriend.

What languages does 12andus support?

The interface is translated into 16 languages: English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, Turkish, Indonesian, Serbian, Thai, and Persian/Farsi. The astrological readings themselves — the actual report text — are available in 12 of those: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Hindi.

Is there a mobile app?

Not yet, but it's on the way. A native iOS and Android app mirroring the main features — Initiation, Passages, Crossroads, Daily Quiz, AI Astro Insight, saved reports, push notifications for major transits — is in active development. The site itself is fully responsive in the meantime, so the mobile browser experience already covers the full feature set.
