Chart signature calculator: what your chart is made of

Before reading a single placement, an astrologer takes in the shape of a chart: what it is made of, what runs it, and how it is arranged. The signature gathers exactly that. It is not a prediction and not an interpretation of any one planet — it is the summary a practised reader forms in the first few seconds and then reads everything else against.

Cast the chart

The elements and modes come first. A chart heavy in fire and light in earth behaves differently from the reverse, and a chart with almost nothing cardinal starts fewer things than one full of it. What is missing tells you as much as what is abundant: the absent element is usually the one a person over-corrects for.

Then the planet that runs the chart. Weight is counted from the placements that give a planet authority — what it rules, where it sits, what it aspects — and the winner is the planet whose concerns keep turning up wherever you look. Following the chain of rulerships to its end gives the final dispositor, the planet everything eventually answers to, and some charts have none, which is its own statement.

The shape matters too: whether the planets gather in one part of the wheel or spread around it. A bundle concentrates a life; a splash scatters it; a bowl leaves half the wheel empty and the chart leans towards what it is missing. This is the oldest kind of chart reading there is, and the most quickly useful.

Most of the signature survives an unknown birth time. The element and mode balance, the dominant planet and the shape are all built from the planets, which barely move in a day; only the parts that depend on the houses and the angles need an accurate time.

Questions people ask

What is a chart signature?

The summary of a birth chart before interpretation: its element and mode balance, the planet that dominates it, the pattern the planets form around the wheel, and the final dispositor of its rulerships.

What does a missing element mean?

Usually not an absence of that quality but a preoccupation with it. A chart with no earth tends to think about practicalities more, not less, than one with plenty.

What is a final dispositor?

Follow each planet to the ruler of the sign it is in, then to that planet's ruler, and so on. If the chain ends on one planet in its own sign, that planet is the final dispositor and the whole chart reports to it. Many charts have none.

Do I need my birth time?

For most of it, no. The elements, modes, dominant planet and chart shape come from the planets. Only the house-based parts need an accurate time.
