A harmonic chart multiplies every position in your birth chart by a whole number and reduces it back into the circle. It sounds arbitrary and is not: the point is that an aspect in the base chart becomes a conjunction in its harmonic. Planets a fifth of the circle apart — seventy-two degrees, the quintile — sit together in the fifth harmonic, where they are impossible to miss.
That is the whole method. The minor aspects are hard to see and easy to dismiss in an ordinary chart; in the right harmonic they become the loudest thing on the wheel. A chart that looks unremarkable can turn out to have a tight stellium in its ninth harmonic, and that tells you something the birth chart was whispering.
Each number carries its own meaning, taken from the aspect it belongs to. The fifth harmonic is craft, creativity and the imposition of form. The seventh is inspiration, longing and the things a person is drawn towards without being able to justify them. The ninth is meaning, and in the Indian tradition the ninth divisional chart is read for marriage and for what a life is ultimately for. The fourth speaks of work and structure, the fifth of talent.
Read a harmonic chart for its conjunctions and its close configurations, not for its houses or its signs — those are artefacts of the multiplication rather than statements. The question to ask is always which planets have been brought together, and then what they mean back in the birth chart they came from.
The planets can be harmonised with an approximate birth time, since they move slowly. The Ascendant and Midheaven cannot: multiply an uncertain angle by nine and the uncertainty multiplies with it, so with no birth time read the planetary conjunctions and leave the angles alone.
The birth chart with every longitude multiplied by a chosen number. Aspects belonging to that number become conjunctions, which makes them easy to see and to judge.
The fifth for craft and creativity, the seventh for inspiration and longing, the ninth for meaning. The fourth is often read for work. Start with the fifth and the ninth — they are the two that most often say something obvious.
Mostly not. The method is about which planets come together; the signs and houses of a harmonic chart are consequences of the arithmetic rather than statements in their own right.
For the planets an approximate one is enough. For the angles it must be accurate, because multiplying a position multiplies its error too.
