A birth chart contains dozens of facts, and they are not equal. Knowing that your Mercury is in Virgo is useful. Knowing how your Sun and Moon get along tells you far more, because it describes the relationship between who you are trying to be and what you need in order to feel all right. Astrology has always paid special attention to such pairings, because a person is not a list of parts. A person is how the parts work together.

That is the idea behind the combinations at the top of our "Aspects, Combos, Houses" report. Before the full list of aspects and houses, the report picks out the few combinations that say the most, and gives each one its own reading.

Your two signature aspects

The report opens with your signature aspects: the two strongest aspects in your whole chart, ranked by how close they are to exact and how important the planets involved are. These are the conversations between planets that shape you most, the ones people notice in you without knowing any astrology.

Their readings are the most detailed the report gives, because they consider the sign and the house of both planets. "Mars square Saturn" is a general idea. "Mars in Aries in the sixth house square Saturn in Cancer in the third" is a specific person: someone who works with great energy and keeps hearing a cautious inner voice about every plan, perhaps one that sounds suspiciously like an older relative.

Your Moon phase

Beside the signature aspects sits your Moon phase: where the Moon stood in relation to the Sun on the day you were born. There are eight phases, from the New Moon through the Full Moon to the balsamic Moon just before the next New Moon. Being born at a given point of that cycle describes a basic orientation. People born near the New Moon tend to start things on instinct; people born near the Full Moon tend to see everything in terms of relationships and contrasts; people born in the last phases tend to finish, digest and let go.

The Moon phase has one practical advantage: it survives an unknown birth time. Each phase is forty-five degrees wide, and the Moon moves only about thirteen degrees a day, so the date is almost always enough.

Sun and Moon

The Sun-Moon combination is the oldest pairing in astrology. The Sun is your conscious identity and purpose; the Moon is your emotional nature and your needs. When their signs are in harmony, what you want and what you need tend to point the same way. When they are not, there is a constant negotiation inside you, which is not a defect: it is often what makes a person interesting.

Picture someone with the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Leo. In public they are serious, responsible and ambitious. In private, they need to be appreciated, warmly and often, and quietly hope someone has noticed how hard they worked. Our reading is written for your exact pair of signs, and if the Sun and Moon also form an aspect, it adds a reading for that aspect too, with how rare it is.

Sun and Venus

The Sun-Venus combination describes your style in romantic meetings: what attracts you, what puts you off, and how your sense of self shapes the way you love. Since Venus never strays far from the Sun, the possible pairs are limited, and each one has a recognisable flavour. A Sun in Aries with Venus in Taurus, for example, rushes in with great enthusiasm, then wants things to slow down and become comfortable.

Venus and Mars

The Venus-Mars combination describes how you express romance and desire. Venus is what you are drawn to and how you attract; Mars is how you pursue. When the two are in similar signs, attraction and action move together. When they are very different, a person may be drawn to one kind of partner and pursue quite another, and then wonder why the story keeps repeating. If Venus and Mars also form an aspect, the reading covers it too, and tells you how rare that aspect is between your two signs.

Your four elements

Every sign belongs to one of four elements: fire (action and enthusiasm), earth (practicality), air (intellect and communication) and water (emotion). Your elements combination ranks the four by how strongly each is present in your chart.

We do not simply count planets. Each planet from the Sun to Pluto adds to the element of its sign according to how much weight it carries in your chart, so a powerful Sun in a fire sign counts for more than a quiet Neptune. The result is one of twenty-four possible orders, from strongest to weakest, and the reading describes how that balance shapes your personality: someone led by fire and air with little earth is full of ideas and may need help with the paperwork. The reading also tells you how rare your combination is.

Sun, Ascendant and the Sun's house

The last combination puts three things together: your Sun sign, your Ascendant and the house your Sun falls in. The Sun is who you are, the Ascendant is how you come across, and the Sun's house is where in life you most need to shine. Two Virgos can be very different people if one has Virgo rising with the Sun in the first house, precise and visible from the first handshake, and the other has Sagittarius rising with the Sun in the tenth, cheerful in manner and quietly meticulous at work.

Why read these first

These combinations are the frame of a chart. Once you know your strongest aspects, your Moon phase, how your Sun relates to your Moon and to your Ascendant, how love and desire are paired, and which elements lead, the long list of aspects and houses that follows stops being a list and becomes detail added to a picture you already have.

Some of them need your birth time. The Sun-Moon reading and the Sun, Ascendant and house combination depend on the houses and the angles, so the report shows them only when the birth time is known. The Moon phase, the Sun-Venus and Venus-Mars pairs and the four elements work from the date alone.

Above the combinations, you can ask the AI astrologer to synthesise them into one reading, and most of the cards show famous people who share the same combination, which can be reassuring or surprising, depending on the company.

Frequently asked questions

What are signature aspects?
The two strongest aspects in your birth chart, ranked by how exact they are and how important the planets involved are. Their readings consider both the sign and the house of each planet.

Why does the Sun-Moon combination matter so much?
Because it pairs your conscious identity with your emotional needs. It describes whether what you want and what you need pull in the same direction, and how you handle it when they do not.

How is my elements combination calculated?
Each planet from the Sun to Pluto adds to the element of its sign, weighted by how important that planet is in your chart. The four elements are then ranked from strongest to weakest, which gives one of twenty-four possible combinations.

What does my Moon phase say?
Where the Moon stood relative to the Sun when you were born, in one of eight phases. It describes a basic orientation, such as starting, building, relating or letting go, and it can be read even without a birth time.

Do I need my birth time for these combinations?
For some. The Sun-Moon reading and the Sun, Ascendant and house combination need it, and so do the houses in the signature aspects. The Moon phase, Sun-Venus, Venus-Mars and the four elements work from the date of birth alone.
